Open and View Your RAW Files on Mac (Free)

You shoot RAW (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, RW2, ORF…) and want to browse them fast on Mac without launching Lightroom? Here's how to open, view and convert your RAW files for free on macOS.

What is RAW?

A RAW file holds the sensor's raw data, with no lossy compression or processing — the "digital negative". Each brand has its extension: CR2/CR3 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), RAF (Fujifilm), ORF (Olympus), RW2 (Panasonic), DNG (Adobe standard).

The upside: huge editing latitude. The downside: large files, and not every app reads them — especially newer camera formats.

Method 1 — Preview & Photos (built-in)

macOS reads most RAW files natively. Double-click the file: Preview opens it. RAW imported into Photos also displays normally. For a just-released camera, a macOS update often adds support.

Limitation: Preview is slow for browsing hundreds of RAW, and doesn't always show the full-resolution preview instantly.

Method 2 — Convert RAW to JPEG (free, built-in)

  1. Open the RAW with Preview.
  2. Menu File › Export…
  3. Choose JPEG, set the quality, then Save.

For a batch: select several RAW, open them in Preview, then File › Export Selected Images.

Method 3 — Cull your photos in Photos

For quick culling (keep/delete, rate), the Photos app works. But to browse a RAW folder outside the library, without importing, a dedicated viewer is more direct.

Method 4 — A dedicated, lightweight RAW viewer

Pitop Viewer

To browse a RAW folder fast, Pitop Viewer opens RAW natively (CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, RW2, ORF…) by extracting the embedded preview for instant display, also handles HEIC and video, with a mosaic, slideshow, ratings/albums, GPS map and light editing — all in an app of about 21 MB (Tauri/Rust, not Electron). Free and open source.

Other options exist (Xee, RawTherapee for developing, Finder Quick Look…); for simple fast viewing, a lightweight viewer that handles RAW and HEIC is ideal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a CR2, NEF or ARW on Mac?

Double-click the file: Preview opens most RAW. Otherwise right-click › Open WithPreview, or use a dedicated viewer.

How do I convert RAW to JPEG for free?

Preview › File › ExportJPEG. Free and no extra software (see Method 2).

Why won't my RAW display?

Often: a camera too new (wait for / install a macOS update), a corrupted file, or a third-party app that doesn't support that RAW. Test with Preview.
